World Heritage

I thought that I had a reasonable understanding of Liverpool’s classical buildings but your book [Classical Liverpool; language, sculpture and architecture]provides a whole new level of detail about the symbolism and origins of the classical style. It is an impressive piece of work and I have learnt much from its contents. I hope that I can remember at least some the most significant information.

It is even more clear from reading your book that Liverpool’s preference for classical architecture is a demonstration of the city’s longstanding aspirations to be seen as a cultural city – well before it was made European Capital of Culture 2008. In World Heritage terms, these architectural and monumental expressions demonstrate an element of Liverpool’s outstanding universal value as “an interchange of human values in the fields of architecture and monumental arts.”!
