St Luke’s Church, Great Crosby: 1853 – 2003

by Hugh Hollinghurst

The consecration of St Luke’s Church 150 years ago is the starting point for this history which contains many insights into the religious and social life of Crosby, and the development of its community. The church in Crosby stemmed from the well of St Michael in times immemorial and this work traces the history of the old chapel of St Michael, and its special links with Merchant Taylors’ School. The book covers the vicars of St Luke’s, the changing pattern of worship, the buildings, graveyard, finances and activities, including the scouts and guides, and the fire of 1972. The part that the daughter churches, All Saints’ and St Michael’s, played in the parish is described. Finally the history of the associated schools, Halsall and St Luke’s Boys’, is presented here for the first time.
